Cornwall

Our favourite cove

Jake, in a black and green wetsuit, finishes his lunch on the sand while Sarah, hand on hip, talks to Nanny and Grandpa, who sit on a blanket to the right. Surf breaks between two rocky headlands behind them.

Every trip has a day like this. The sun’s out, the surf’s up, and we end up on our favourite cove, hidden away between the cliffs.

Jake, still in his wetsuit, is finishing off his lunch, while Sarah chats to Nanny and Grandpa on the blanket. Their usual spot was further down, nearer the sea, but that day they’d moved up the beach, out of the way of the tide and the chilly wind.

Grandpa is no longer with us, which makes days like this one all the more special to look back on. He was part of the Cornwall tradition from the very start, back when Sarah was a small girl on these same beaches.

Katie, in a turquoise hoodie with her hair blowing in the wind, walks across the sand towards the camera, with Jake and Sarah behind her.

And here’s Katie, wind in her hair, heading back to base camp on the blanket. Between them, Katie and Jake have never missed a year.
